What a marvellous event Easter must be for all of us, but is it? Easter depicts the resurrection of Jesus from death and, in turn, the actual resurrection of our souls from the death of sin to the life of grace. But is it?
Many fail to go to church and the cause for this indifference is sin. Then there are those who live in sin, go to church and receive Holy Communion as a routine.
Another miserable phenomenon is to have so many children receiving their First Holy Communion and then most of them are not taken to church again, if not occasionally. Similarly, what a pitiable case it is to see many taking part in external parochial manifestations while only few of them are present in church for Mass and Eucharistic adoration.
In the Old Testament Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy the city of Sodom on condition that he found 50 righteous persons, but unfortunately the just amounted to fewer than 10. Who knows, if God were to reveal to us how many are in the state of grace at this very moment, shall we be as disappointed as Abraham was? Who knows, if God were to raise all our relatives and ancestors buried in our cemeteries, how many of them will rise to eternal life? Shall we remain stunned at the number?
We are very much concerned about material poverty and we do well, but how little we are aware of the spiritual poverty that is flourishing around us. Many could not care less about their spiritual life. Many are being deceived by deferring their conversion to their last moment on earth. How many of these will fail to convert and choose hell as their eternal destiny?
Christ told us that those who commit sin are slaves of sin. These slaves are devoid of sanctifying grace and so they are spiritually dead: they are dancing skeletons on the broad way to damnation.
