Three mature ficus trees at the top of Labour Avenue in Naxxar have died after allegedly having been poisoned.

Naxxar Mayor Maria Deguara said at a press conference that the council had, since June, unsuccessfully tried to save the 50-year-old trees, which according to an expert, had been poisoned.

The environment NGO Fliemkien Ghal-Ambjent Ahjar condemned what had happened to the trees and regretted that this was not an isolated case.

There were complaints over the years that the trees were an inconvenience to nearby residents because of the damage which their roots caused to sewage systems and even tiling.
