Jurors in a murder trial were yesterday taken on a tour of the crime scene in Żejtun where a bomb exploded in 2005, killing one woman and seriously injuring another.

They were shown where the bomb was left and where it was moved before it went off.

Also present were presiding judge Mr Justice Michael Mallia, prosecuting lawyers Philip Galea Farrugia and Maurizio Cordina from the Attorney General’s Office, and defence lawyer Joe Mifsud.

Two innocent bystanders, Tessie Grima and Angela Bondin, moved the bag containing a remotely controlled bomb just before it blew up on June 18. They had thought it was full of rubbish.

Ronnie Azzopardi stands charged with killing Ms Bondin, who died in hospital of her injuries, causing serious injury to Ms Grima, as well as with the attempted murder of the intended victims, his sister-in-law and three of her children.

Taking the witness stand on Friday, Ms Grima said she was on the roof of her house in Our Lady of Mercy Street when she saw a blue car come to a halt near a red letter box opposite her home.

Someone in the car left a grey bag at the letter box.

She remarked to her husband, Joseph, how disrespectful it was of the man to leave a rubbish bag there and she later went downstairs to move it. In the street she met her friend, Ms Bondin, who offered to help her carry the bag.

Ms Grima said she refused the help but after peering inside and finding what she thought was a battery, she moved it towards the garage of her son’s house, which was still under construction.

Some moments later, the bomb exploded.

Her hair was set on fire and the skin on her arms was falling off as her son Anthony rushed her to hospital, Ms Grima testified.

The jury is expected to return a verdict tomorrow.
