Birkirkara Falcons are the winners of the MIA Women’s Sevens series at Marsa.

On Saturday, the Falcons first beat Stompers 36-0 and then followed that up with a 17-7 win over Kavallieri to top the league.

At the end of the competition, the jubilant Falcons girls were presented with the cup by Daniela Mallia, PR and Corporate Communications Manager for Malta International Airport (MIA).

Falcons coach Carmelo Longo said the team had trained hard all season and deserved the accolades.

“The difference with last year was the strength in depth in our squad,” he said.

“There was also the improvement of several new players,” he added, singling out Rodianne Bugeja for special praise.

“Rodianne Bugeja did well but I stress that this was a great overall performance that saw the team through.”

Last weekend also saw action from the Mediterranean Bank 10s Cup for men with Gladiators coming up against Gozo Bulls in the opening match.

Gozo produced a spirited display against the league leaders for whom George Mupimhidza opened the scoring.

Dan Zammit also touched down for Gladiators with Clifford Debattista replying for Gozo to leave the half-time score at 12-7.

In the second half, Gladiators upped the pressure and another try from Zammit, plus a penalty try when Nick Vella was prevented from scoring, made the final score 24-7 in Gladiators’ favour.

Attard Saracens played Stompers in the second match – a one-sided affair that had four tries from Matthew Alexander, two from Rob Meinjes and one from Max Galea giving Stompers the victory by 39 points to zero.

The other match from the Med. Bank Cup was between Overseas and Kavallieri.

In an exciting, high-scoring contest, Kavallieri opened the scoring with a try by Neil Bradley but Overseas struck back with scores by Eugenio Millan, Charlo Seychell and Andrew Schembri to put them 21-5 ahead.

Anthony Hayes got one back for Kavallieri before further tries by DJ Koran, Karl Busuttil and a second for Millan left the half-time score at 40-12.

In the second half, Overseas kept up the pressure and Koran added a second to his tally, and Chris Blake scored a fine breakaway try.

Kavallieri fought back and veteran Patrice Debiere pulled a try back after sustained pressure.

However, Overseas finished the stronger, with a breakaway try from Andrew Schembri and a second score for Busuttil, leaving the final score at 66-17 for Overseas.
