A Royal Navy sailor was airlifted to hospital by the Armed Forces of Malta yesterday morning after suffering a back injury.

The master of HMS Scott, a Royal Navy ocean survey vessel, requested medical evacuation of an injured female officer some 30 nautical miles south of Malta.

An Italian Air Force helicopter was scrambled and the patient was safely winched on to the aircraft at 9.35am.

The patient was transferred to St Luke’s Hospital helipad, where an ambulance took her to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical examination.
