Is enough importance given to living a healthy lifestyle in Malta?

I think awareness about living a healthy lifestyle is improving. From a young age, children are becoming more conscious about eating healthy food, possibly because of the banning of sweets during school hours and the introduction of fruit and vegetable schemes in most schools.

Through various information campaigns, the Health Promotion Department is helping to encourage more people to lead a healthy lifestyle. Lexania Fenech, 20, Mcast-Btec Higher National Diploma in Health and Social Care (Practice).

Not really. In fact, Malta is said to have one of the highest obesity rates in Europe. But since the Government is aware of the issue, initiatives are being taken to improve the situation. Daniela Bonanno, 23, Doctor of Laws.

I think awareness has increased significantly in recent years. Michael Saliba, 19, Bachelor of Science in Earth Systems.

What do you think about the abundance of fast-food outlets?

I think fast-food outlets are a big temptation for those who have a hectic life, and for youths. They do not contribute to living a healthy lifestyle because of the high level of calories and low levels of nutrition they offer. Children are attracted to fast-food outlets by the adverts on television and the free gifts some offer. Having said that, eating from fast-food outlets once in a while won’t hurt you either. Lexania Fenech

It is up to each individual to moderate his or her fast-food intake and to maintain a balanced diet.

Personally, I like fast food but the outlets do not influence me much. Daniela Bonanno

Since this is a free economy, nothing can be done to reduce their numbers, regardless of the effects they have. Michael Saliba

What does living a healthy lifestyle entail?

Living a healthy lifestyle means maintaining a balanced diet, including fruit and vegetables. A balanced diet means that a person has to take the amounts of essential nutrients the body requires. Regular exercise is also necessary for a healthier lifestyle. Keeping yourself fit can keep many illnesses away from you too. Lexania Fenech

A balanced diet and exercise. But, personally, I think doing things that make you happy, prioritising, faith and relationships, among other things, go hand in hand with living healthy lifestyles. Daniela Bonanno

I would say a healthy diet and lots of exercise. Michael Saliba
