Water-saving kits will be distributed to households to help them reduce consumption by up to 25 per cent, Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi announced yesterday.

The project will build on the “good work” done with a similar pilot project in Gozo, Mr Mizzi said after a visit to Water Services Corporation’s reverse osmosis plant in Pembroke.

Mr Mizzi described the plant as a “world class operation” and thanked the workers for their drive towards efficiency as he underscored the Government’s commitment to water conservation and lower costs.

Mr Mizzi also said that the key to reducing the price of reverse osmosis water was through the reduction of electricity costs which would be achieved through the Government’s energy plan aimed at reducing bills by March 2014 for families and a year later for businesses.

Marking World Water Day, Mr Mizzi said the UN this year highlighted the importance of international collaboration to make sustainable use of water. Mr Mizzi said Malta could be a centre of excellence in the Mediterranean and offer advice on reverse osmosis best practices, creating a new source of revenue for the corporation.

Mr Mizzi also stressed the importance of turning the Malta Resources Authority into a dedicated regulator, with its policy units for energy and water moved to the Energy Ministry to ensure the watchdog’s autonomy.
