Security Service head in court over traffic accident
The former head of the Security Service, Godfrey Scicluna, 61 of Paola, was this morning accused in court of having, through carelessness, involuntarily seriously injured 91-year-old Raffaele Lugermo on June 2 at about 1 p.m.
The injuries were caused when Mr Scicluna hit Mr Lugermo with his car. Mr Lugermo suffered fractures and bruising. He died last month from natural causes.
Mr Scicluna has suspended himself from the service.

Yet the case of Cliff Micallef, Lifecyclist killed in a hit and run languishes for years... (which incidentally is unfair on the victim and the accused) despite being in the press now and again. There seems no consistency in our justice system. At least in this case the SS chief reported it himself and suspended himself so it could not be said he influenced the course of justice.

Is it the norm than an accused is brought before the courts 9 months after an accident happens?

In Malta it is. I hope this will change, I wont hold my breath though.

Whilst the accident did cause serious injury to the victim why did Mr Scicluna suspend himself from doing his job, im not entirely sure but surely his job is not related to the accident..........i do hope Mr Scicluna is NOT receiving his salary!!!

Unfortunately Raffaele suffered a lot before he died, due to this accident. Hopefully justice is done!

If the victim was a healthy young man, he would have had a better outcome following this accident and he may not have died.
It is unfortunate that it was an old man.

I think it would be unfortunate if it is proven that this accident happened through carelessness! Old man - young man - whatever....nobody wants to get hurt.....especially through carelessness!

And yet ..when this news came out the PL bloggers tried to tie in his auto-suspension to the Oil scandal.

I presume the June 2 referred too is 2012?In any event, why only now is he being arraigned and when was this charge actually made against him?

He was never charged; police kindly forgot to press charges until some newspaper mentioned it a few weeks ago. There was then a sudden awakening.

Mr Caruana, agreed. In fact it would be considered far worse relative to the considerable power exercised and available to the SS chief.
