An alternative site is being sought by the Agriculture Parliamentary Secre-tariat and the Animal Welfare Department to house 180 stray cats that currently live on the roof of the Maċina, in Senglea.

On Thursday, The Times reported that the Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines had to evacuate the premises in two weeks’ time.

The carers expressed concern that unless they find an alternative suitable place, they will have to put down all the animals.

Speaking to The Times, Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes said that he has taken immediate action to stop the cats from being put down.

“Next week, the Land Department should be presenting me with proposals for alternative sites.

“The short-term solution will be to temporarily relocate the cats to a more suitable place.

“However, the long-term plan is to have a proper sanctuary for the animals.

“We aim to minimise bureaucracy.”

He said the Government was also considering the possibility of providing financial assistance to the organisations concerned in line with this year’s Budget, which states that NGOs are to be given financial aid.
