New Economy Minister Chris Cardona will be running up the mileage on his ministerial car over the next few months in his quest to visit every local factory “big or small”.

Dr Cardona made the pledge following a tour of Toly Products in Bulebel yesterday morning, re-emphasising the Government’s commitment to local manufacturing.

That meant encouraging higher value-added manufacturing while ensuring jobs in more traditional sectors were protected, he said. Over 20,000 people work in the manufacturing sector, with their work contributing 13 per cent of Malta’s GDP.

Dr Cardona’s visit was welcomed by company director and deputy CEO William Wait, who felt it was a “very strong message that manufacturing will be a priority under this Government” and assured the minister of the manufacturing sector’s full cooperation.

Mr Wait is also deputy president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.

The minister followed his Toly tour with visits to Playmobil, Farsons and Consolidated Biscuits.
