The former head of Enemalta’s petroleum division, Alfred Mallia, was yesterday placed under a bill of indictment over charges of corruption in connection with the purchase of oil.

The court had previously heard that Mr Mallia took commissions on oil tenders awarded to French oil company Total and split the kickbacks with Enemalta’s former financial controller, Tarcisio Mifsud.

During yesterday’s sitting, the executive head of corporate services at Enemalta, Anthony Bonello, took the witness stand to present a number of documents and the employment history of Mr Mallia.

The accused was employed with the corporation between March 1987 and April 2004, when the then chairman, Tancred Tabone, offered him early retirement and he took it.

Mr Mifsud faces similar charges to Mr Mallia while Mr Tabone has been charged with money laundering and taking a private interest in the adjudication of oil tenders.

Magistrate Anthony Vella ruled that there was enough evidence for Mr Mallia to be placed under a bill of indictment.

The case continues.
