Update 4 - High waves, strong wind batter Malta

High waves are battering Cirkewwa and the North-West coast of Malta and Gozo - as forecast by the Met Office.

No serious damage was caused, but in Kappara a brick wall bordering a field collapsed, causing some damage to parked cars. Two electricity poles, one in Ibragg and one in Zejtun, also toppled over.

A reader measured a gust of 95 km/h (Force 10) using a handheld anemometer at Dwejra Bay

The rough sea and strong winds are expected to persist well into tomorrow and may also be accompanied by rain and hail tomorrow as the temperature drops.

I find your comment narrowminded and upsetting. The last person in the UK to lose his life in this way was a 4 year old boy taken by a sudden freak wave. The same thing in Malta would probably result in comments blaming the roads, buses or the Politicians

Anthony Connolly

@Julie Peace. The context of the note is not that accidents do happen and it is very upsetting. The message being put over is about the idiots that think it sporting to put their own life at risk. As Mr Gatt states "there are no nutters running along the shore line" I regret any the remark upset you but I can't withdraw my staement

Spot on- we are paying through the nose in taxes for these useless turbines in the U.K. and some people are getting extremely rich at taxpayers' expense.

S. Camilleri

Mar 15th, 08:30

That's somewhat narrow minded.
Of course there's powerlines and transformers and an infrastructure but if you want energy they're a lesser evil. As to intermittency and variability, this is not saying anything new. Looking at the bigger picture, any power source becomes intermittent; the sun goes down at night and boilers are taken off line for maintenance. The trick is a grid infrastructure

John L Galea

Mar 15th, 07:22

@C Bartoli: pt1: Imma qabel tparla ara l-istampa kollha. Ha nfehmek ftit forsi tinduna kemm int vojt. Il-powerstations tal-gas mhux qed ikunu viabbli barra minn Malta minhabba li barra ghandhom coal powerstations, nuclear powerstations, wind turbines, solar farms, etc. Therefore the energy need is low from these powerstations though gas is much cheaper. The situation in Malta is totally different.

John L Galea

Mar 15th, 07:25

pt 2: We are totally dependent on a powerstation. Moreover, if you read the articles well, they still vouch that gas is the most clean alternative to all other fuels. It's all about oil lobbyists. So before you speak all check the real facts.

@A Vella: The environment under GonziPN went backwards 100 years. We are the least country in Europe to generate energy from renewable sources.

Mar 14th, 15:16

Winf energy alright, during the past couple of hrs. i seen a few water tank tops flying off roofs and also looks like satellite dishes and pieces of antennas, the rest is history. i hate to get on the ferries in this high winds.

B. Farrugia

Mar 14th, 15:27

This level of wind and wave energy is not usable, and is destructive.
All wind turbines would have to be shut down !

C Cassar

Mar 14th, 15:37

so what would wind turbines do between May and October when there's very little wind? Oh yes, I remember, they will sit there costing millions to maintain. Sorry but wind power has been proven to be highly inefficient.

S Scerri

Mar 14th, 15:51

Wave energy, rather. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_power

Joe Borg

Mar 14th, 15:52

Yes true, but these high winds/seas cannot be harnessed with current technology as current tech. has a limited dynamic range and usually are designed to shut down in such conditions.

Michael Borg

Mar 14th, 15:54

Wave energy as well....On another note, it seems both major political parties forgot the legally-binding EU 2020 targets for renewable energy during the electoral campaign

Patrick Zammit

Mar 14th, 16:15

Do you know that when it is this windy, wind turbines have to be stopped?
Do you know that when it's calm, wind turbines have to turned electrically?

Geoffrey Farrugia

Mar 14th, 16:15

wrong. to generate energy from wind you need constant wind at moderate speed and not gale force like this.

with these kind of winds the only smiling people will be the ones doing maintance works on the windfarms - the chances are that most of them will be damaged with gale force winds.

Mar 14th, 16:23

trust me you dont want wind farms in malta, i have 1 less than half a mile from my house and there are 13 windmills that stand 120 metres high, such a blot on the landscape. you seriously DO NOT want windfarms.

Ka Busuttil

Mar 14th, 16:30

Today those wind turbines would be catching fire!!!

Michael Borg

Mar 14th, 16:47

@ B. Farrugia, Joe Borg: Wind turbines are usually shut off at wind speeds around Force 10 (just search for the cut-off windspeed of wind turbines, it is usually around 25m/s), so even in most of the storms experienced around Malta and Gozo they can still operate. If one looks at floating wind turbines they have been proven to operate in extreme seas off the coast of Portugal (search WindFloat).

Michael Borg

Mar 14th, 16:53

@ C Cassar: Note that wind turbines are specifically designed for the site where they are placed, and can start operating in windspeeds between Force 2-3. A maintenance schedule can be adopted to utilise the time when there are low wind speeds for maintenance. Also onshore wind power is competing with fossil fuels in Europe, and it is only a short span of time before offshore is also competitive.

C Cassar

Mar 15th, 14:35

@Michael Borg:

You are clearly clueless. Wind farm technology is only sustainable in certain areas of the Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea in Europe. The Mediterranean is not suitable. Just because we are having 2-3 days of windy weather doesn't justify any wind farms in Malta. The kindergarten mentality seen on here is quite sad.

People this is nature. You are an island, a beautiful one, you are surrounded by the sea you must expect things like this. The waves are beautiful and yes, you must be careful not to get close to them. In Nova Scotia, Canada, I was mesmerized by the waves hitting the rocks , so very high. The spray of water in your face. The air is so fresh, the wind so cool, just lovely
