The election of Louis Grech, Edward Sicluna and Simon Busuttil has opened new opportunities for the unsuccessful candidates in the election to the European Parliament.

Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas appeares best placed to inherit Dr Busuttil's seat while for Labour, Marlene Mizzi is in pole position, followed by Glenn Bedingfield and Claudette Abela Baldacchino.

Mr Bedingfield has already served briefly in the EP, having replaced Joseph Muscat when he resigned to take over the helm of the Labour party. He was not re-elected in 2009.

Ms Abela Baldacchino has served in the EU's Committee of Regions.

The new MEPs, once appointed, will serve until the next EP election in a year's time.
