To what extent can mathematical modelling, data gathering and computer simulation answer questions such as: Is it going to rain tomorrow?; Should I invest in a stock?; Will this virus spread?; Where will the next severe earthquake be?; Will I meet traffic on my way to work tomorrow?
This is the theme of the next Malta Cafe Scientifique talk entitled Into the Looking Glass to be given by Kenneth Scerri on Thursday at 7.30pm in the Music Room, St James Cavalier, Valletta.
During his talk Dr Scerri will explore the mathematical developments that have made it possible to predict complex tasks; he will also talk about the limits of today’s technology and hint at exciting future possibilities.
The talk is free and will be followed by an open discussion. The Malta Cafe Scientifique is supported by the Malta Chamber of Scientists (www.mcs.org.mt) and the University of Malta.
