Locally he’s known as the guitarist in prominent metal bands Forsaken and Norm Rejection, but Maltese guitarist Sean Vukovic is also involved in other musical projects, not least his own solo work. It is, in fact, in this capacity, that his song Hurricane Blue has made it to the finals of the International Songwriting Competition.

No stranger to this competition, Vukovic’s Song for Rudy had received an honourable mention in the 2010 edition of the Nashville-based ISC, which the New York Times has described as “the songwriting competition to take note of”.

Out of over 20,000 entries, 324 songs have been shortlisted and split into different categories, with Vukovic’s Hurricane Blue being one of the 16 songs in the instrumental category that will now be evaluated by a panel of celebrity judges. The winners will be announced in April.

Meanwhile, all the finalist entries have also been posted online at the ISC website as part of The People’s Vote, a separate competition in which the public can listen to the songs and vote for their favourite. Voting is open and will close on March 31.
