Columnist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia was last night questioned by the police over blogs she uploaded yesterday.

Policemen called at Ms Caruana Galizia’s home and escorted her to Mosta police station. A timesofmalta.com video captured her walking in.

Ms Caruana Galizia uploaded several posts with political content during the course of the day.

The law bans political activities and reports or declarations that may influence voters on the eve of an election and on election day itself.

Anybody found guilty of breaking the silence is liable to a fine or a prison term. The police do not have to receive a complaint to prosecute.

Many other internet users yesterday also pushed the boundaries of the Reflection Day law, some with subtle and others with not-so-subtle political messages.

When asked earlier in the day whether they would be prosecuting anyone, the police said they would have to investigate instances of presumed abuse “on a case by case basis”.

“Some networks, such as some social networks, might be considered as private medium,” a police spokeswoman said without elaborating.

The law prohibits political statements and comments both in the traditional print and broadcast media and on the internet if they are accessible to the public.

However, lawyers who spoke to The Times this week had questioned the practicality of policing the internet with all its complexities.

Traditional media have respected the law but the proliferation of virtual social networks and internet blogging sites raised question marks as to whether the law should remain as is.

Meanwhile, the two major parties yesterday agreed to cover up their billboards after voting closes tonight. The move has nothing to do with the day of reflection but rather intended to stave off any vandalism after the election result is out tomorrow.

In a joint statement, the two parties appealed for the peace to be kept and police instructions to be obeyed, whatever the outcome of the election.
