Turnout for the general election up to 2 pm was 49 per cent, up from 45 per cent in 2008, the Electoral Commission said.
That puts turnout so far on the same lines as 2003.
The highest turnout today was of 55 per cent in the fourth electoral district, and the lowest - 44 per cent - in the third district.
