The number of Maltese who travelled abroad in January rose by 14 per cent when compared with the same month last year, national data showed.

The National Statistics Office said there were 22,046 outbound tourist trips in January, a rise of 14 per cent – or 2,710 – from the first month of 2012.

More than 19,000 outbound tourist trips by Maltese residents were to EU countries and about 3,000 headed for non-EU destinations. Both markets registered increases of 15 and 11 per cent respectively.

The UK and Italy remained the two most popular destinations, sharing 65 per cent of the total outbound tourism market.

In the month under review, male travellers outnumbered females, accounting for 55 per cent of the total.
