Mdina ditch project completed

The Mdina ditch which separates the Silent City from Rabat has been transformed into a fully accessible public garden.

The project, launched two years ago, will be inaugurated this evening by the Prime Minister.

The ditch was previously inaccessible except for sections which were used as a sports pitch and for parking.

None of the trees have been lost  but they have been rearranged so as to help one get a better understanding of the bastions. New trees have also been planted and the bastions have been restored..

What change Mr Fenech ? Do you honestly think that these projects can be achieved in days or weeks ?

I ask, why do we get such ignorant bloggers who make negative comments at everything just for political gain ?

We have never had such regeneration or renovation for years and now that the present government has done something about it we still manage to complain !!!

Are you serious ? ... work on this project has been going on for the last couple of years.

You need to remove your blinkers. Do you seriously believe this was done in the last couple of weeks? I live abroad and was in Malta last Summer and works had already started.

Gorg,
Of course this did not begin last month. It is the timing of the official opening that is in discussion here. Maybe you should remove the cotton from your ears?

Antonio Anastasi

M.Sciberaas. The creepers were NOT on the bastions and as can be plainly seen these were not destroying the wall. These were an important habitat for pollinators, birds and many other insects. The roots of the orange trees after over 30 years were not damaging the bastions, and were important to pollinators like bees. And YES protected olive trees and 4 Cypress, also protected were destroyed.

As a person that grew up in Rabat, this ditch was not in a state of disaster. It could have been rehabilitated, keeping the orange grove in place, and not cover the whole area in turf. The tennis court, of historical importance could have been refurbished. An important parking space for at least a 100 cars has been lost. The ditch was often open to everyone.

I FULLY AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID !!! Was lovely to look down n see the orange trees and the green covered walls...there is already a garden up there with banches and to walk around who needed the cement down there ..shockingggg !!! And yes wasted money !!!! Was a LOVELY PIECE OF PARADISE BEFORE !!! So sad ...but whose idea was this ..incredible !!!

Stefan Zammit

Mar 6th, 20:18

Plants' roots in walls damage the walls, you do not to be an architect to know that. And it's not an opinion, it's a fact and a safety hazard.

And what was a paradise? The broken tennis courts perhaps?

Gorg Sciberras

The trees were too big. The pruning they have done makes sense as future fruits will be lower down, easier to pick and that reduces the risk of fungus. The trees will be easier to prune, meaning less fungus. If you have a citrus or any fruit tree you would know. Also a large part of this area was a dirt football pitch and a tennis court which was not in very good shape. Looks much better now.

That is just Giovanni Bonello's opinion. Very few people agree with him.

Antonio Anastasi

Mar 6th, 20:19

@Cremona. Bonello was wrong on many counts. Dubrovnik, Lucca, Festung Hohensalzburg, Veste Oberhaus, Nordlingen, Rothenburg, Schloss Hohenschwangau,York, Segovia, Opidos, Toledo, The Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Rhodes and many other fortifications throughout Europe, have parts, if not all, of their fortifications and inner city adorned with trees.

C Cassar

Some of the original trees were lost, many more planted and more importantly a huge area now accessible and worth visiting. The project needs 1-2 years to mature.

Why do the Maltese hate any king of change or anything new?

Antonio Anastasi

Mar 6th, 20:24

Mr.Cassar, many protected trees were destroyed. All it needed to make the area accessible was to open the gates of the orange grove. There was absolutely no reason to remove this grove, or the ivy that was deflecting the heat from the walls. The removal of this grove and the ivy covering the area in concrete has created a heat trap. There is nothing beautiful in this project.

The area has been landscaped, trees have been moved and pruned (all very necessary). The are now needs to mature over the next 1-2 years.

I really don't understand why so many seem so jealous as it's an area that can be enjoyed by everyone. Previously it was a garbage dump and car park, maybe that's what the Maltese really want?

No, less parking spaces are needed. Next to be replaced with a quiet open air (maybe gardens) is the ugly car park just outside Mdina gates.

There is an excellent bus service to Rabat serving most of the islands.

There are plenty of grass variants that flourish even in Malta's summer climate. As regards fertilizers, there is plenty of composted organic matter derived from kitchen & garden waset that can be used at very low cost.

Lovely project and nice result.
