Genel completes acquisition of controlling stake in oil exploration south of Malta

Genel plc has completed the acquisition of 75% of the shareholding in Phoenicia Energy Company Ltd (PECL) held by Mediterranean Oil & Gas.

PECL owns the rights to exploration activity in Area 4 in the sea south of Malta.

Genel has made an immediate cash payment of US$10 million and will fund the cost for the first exploration well, called Hagar Qim 1, planned to be drilled to a minimum depth of 2,500 metres. Drilling is due to start late next year or early next year.

Genel will also shoulder the cost for a second exploration well up to a maximum of US$30 million.

Genel Energy plc, formerly Vallares PLC, is an exploration and production company. It is an independent oil producer in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Area 4 (Blocks 4,5,6 and 7) off Malta covers an area where the maritime border has been agreed and internationally recognised with Libya. The blocks are within the Medina Bank area in water depths of around 500m.

"Hydrocarbon production has been established in adjacent areas for several decades with the Area 4 block having considerable exploration potential. Genel’s blocks are anticipated to be geologically similar to the producing areas of the Libya Sirte Basin and Tunisia," Genel said on its website.

"3D seismic has been shot and interpreted which has identified a number of plays and several prospects have been defined in each play type, with total prospective acreage of 800 mmboe targeted. A large prospect and lead inventory is being developed, with an initial exploration well planned for late 2013/early 2014."

How pathetic - don't you understand that this is a private international and the only interest it has is finding oil from which it will make huge profits. You can rest assured that those running this Company do not even know who is Lawrence and for that matter Joseph Muscat. Michael Seychell Tal-Pieta

why do you know of a single company in the world who invests millions so others take the profits instead of it????

what's your point exactly??

Or whenever there is an 'R' in the month and the weather is 'satisfactory'. - But this could change at long or short notice :-)

It wouldn't be the first time....one can only hope that some of it would trickle down.

You are probably right, but if we became even a moderate sized oil producer, then it would be virtually impossible for anyone to form a government without guaranteeing that our energy bills would be slashed to the bone and we would get many more benefits as well.

Unless they could deliver those things then they might as well leave the Oil in the ground.

Why would it be an election gimmick? How does who is in government determine whether these companies will strike oil? If they strike oil. the profits will end up mainly in the pocket of these large multinationals of course - hopefully government will have signed some profit-sharing agreement or set up some taxes which will benefit Malta.

Would anyone spend $10 million just for a short-lived thrill, you call a gimmick? Don't blame you though since you, like many, has been living a life of gimmicks for five years now.
E Schembri, corruption is out there in scads and no Muscat or Gonzi is going to stop it. The difference is that one hides criminal acts while the other goes to the police.
Forget MLP's past? How about the present?

@ Pippo

What good is it, if in a year or two we strike oil, when Joseph's LNG fired power station, as promised, will come on line and the inter-connector would have been operational for one whole year?
The 600 million, plus interest, plus profit for the 'unknown investor' would have to be paid back, no?
Let's not spend it before we even know the outcome.

First, are you sure that we didn't strike oil Mr Gauder? Secondly this is not the first time that drilling was done in an undisputed area. If your statement is correct I am sorry but I never tought that Kercem-Gozo was a disputed area.

I remember your comment Mr Farrugia. You were 100% right. A pre-election gimmick!

@ Maria. Im just psychic like most of the maltese population that hasn't their blinds closed and knows to expect these headlines every election. Its a really shame that its all hot air.

@matthew farrugia and his followers: you are more blind than you think - no-one is satying that they struck oil! Something we certainly struck in Malta is loads of fools.

@ Matthias aka the modern Nostradamus, did anyone mention we struck oil? Do you honestly think this is some sort of gimmick knowing that a wold renown company like Genel has made an immediate cash payment of US$10 million?
