What, you must be thinking as you read this, is the mention of architects doing on the music pages?
There is one reason, and one reason only, and that’s because Architects is the title of the brand new single from local indie jazz-funk combo Funk Initiative. Actually, they describe what they do as “fun, slightly jazzy, funky, a tad rockish but so indie”; all of which, I can confirm, is true.
Having honed their sound and presence on the local scene thanks to a clutch of impressive tunes, among them 2012’s oddly-titled My Robot Monkey Arm is Better than Yours (don’t ask!) and 2011’s The Liberators, an accomplished song on all levels that is easily one of the best tunes to come out of the local scene to date, Funk Initiative have managed to maintain a freshness in their music that lends it an immediacy without being too in your face.
There’s a familiar ring to Architects, but as with each of their singles to date, it veers off at a tangent while retaining the band’s effective blend of rhythm, groove, “sexy saxophone riffs” (as they like to call them) and the voice of this year’s Eurovision Malta Song Festival winner Gianluca Bezzina.
Commenting about the song, the band says Architects, which was recorded by Niki Gravino at Foreface Studios, was “inspired by the way people live their lives trying to build their successes and fulfil their dreams but in truth end up being destructive as much as they are constructive”.
A music video for the song, directed and produced by Jacques Norris, has also been released. Taking its cue from the song title, the video features footage of the notorious annual Architecture vs Law students water fight that takes place at the University of Malta.
