A 56-year-old man was hospitalised after an accident at the Upper Barrakka lift in Valletta yesterday afternoon.

One of the lift cabins stopped working as a safety precaution, due to a malfunction, and a ceiling panel got dislodged, Transport Malta said. Police sources said the man was in the lift when it suddenly stopped and a piece of metal from the cabin roof fell on him.

He was slightly injured and needed some stitches.

Transport Malta asked engineers to check both lift cabins. The lift was still being assessed for safety but the other was operating again and open to the public.

An inquiry was being held by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti.
