A 56-year old man was slightly injured earlier this afternoon after an accident at the Upper Barrakka lift in Valletta.

Police sources said that the man was in the lift when it suddenly stopped and a piece of metal from the roof of the cabin fell on him.

Transport Malta said in a statement later that the incident happened following a malfunction in one of the lift cabins, which stopped as a safety precaution, and a ceiling panel got dislodged.Transport Malta said it requested the engineers to check both lift cabins, and one has already been certified safe for use and is back in operation. The second one is still being assessed. An inquiry is being held by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti.
