Prison breakout foiled as guards shoot at helicopter, prisoner

Footage released by Greek police shows a helicopter used in a failed prison escape attempt riddled with bullets and with automatic weapons on the seats.

The helicopter was used in an attempt to free a prisoner on Sunday.

The chartered aircraft took fire from guards at Trikala jail as it hovered above an outdoor prison yard and dropped a rope ladder.

Convicted criminal Panagiotis Vlastos made a dash for the ladder as he tried to escape.

But as guards exchanged fire with men inside the aircraft, it was forced to land.

Vlastos was injured when he fell off the ladder and is now back in prison.

The pilot claimed he was forced to fly to the jail against his will.
