Zammit Clapp residents evacuated after small fire
Video: Jason Borg
Residents and staff at Zammit Clapp Hospital were evacuated as a safety precaution this afternoon when a tumble drier caught fire. No one was injured.
The fire, reported at around 2.15pm, was put out by members of the Civil Protection Department as the residents were taken out, some of them on wheelchairs and beds.
35 of the residents were transferred to other institutions and three were taken to Mater Dei Hospital as a precaution for examination for smoke inhalation.

Yes , good emergency response. First call the fire brigade , this takes a few seconds , then get the people out, then call the in-house fire team and try and limit the effected area until the professionals arrive.
Then find out if possible the reason of the fire and possibly take corrective actions to reduce future risks of a repeat.

R.Cilia Nistgha nassigurak li extinguishers hemm mal-home kollha u mhux talli hekk talli l-istaff kollhu huwa mharreg b' fire courses li jsiru min zmien ghal zmien .
Twanny Borg, kien biss incident li jistgha jigri lil kull dar , mhux qed jistennew li ssir tragedja biex ikun hemm spezzjonijiet nassigurak,. Proset lil kull min ta sehmu biex flok tragedja spicca kollox b'wicc il-gid.

Safety rules governing commercial/institutional properties require calling the Fire Department when fires occur, no matter how small they happen to be.
Besides, I don't imagine that a tumbler in a hospital would be the same size as a domestic one!
The proper procedure appears to have been followed thanks to the staff and the Fire Department.

Are there no fire extinguishers at Zammit Clapp Hospital?

Of course there is - but fire procedures have to be followed and probably evacuation was the route that had to be followed. One has to mention that staff in hospitals follow several courses on fire evacuation procedures which must be followed no matter how small a fire is! Good job to everyone involved!
