PM lays foundation stone of life sciences park

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has laid the foundation stone of the life sciences park in San Gwann.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Gonzi said the park, being built by Malta Enterprise, was a symbol of the country's economic transformation.

The site, where the former VF textile factory used to be, will house a number of laboratories in a bid to encourage private companies specializing in life-sciences and medical research to set up shop in Malta.

Dr Gonzi said the country had "strong economic foundations" as a result of his government's decisions over the years to redirect funds from subsidies to meaningful investments.

He said the life sciences park, known as Bio-Malta Campus, will help generate more jobs, and better jobs.

The Bio-Malta campus will cost €38 million and is being part-financed by the EU. It is spread over 35,000 square metres and will include four buildings that cater for 61 units and laboratories.

Construction will be completed next year.

An impression of how the life-sciences park will look.An impression of how the life-sciences park will look.

Because the work of a government does not stop because there is an election coming. If you have the slightest idea you would know how much work a project entails before anything starts to happen on site. That is why the powerstation construction timeline is such a farce even not considering that a power station is a much more complex construction than the structures that will house life-Sciences

@ Joseph Micallef
'But government work does not stop because an election is coming'.
I think Mr. Camilleri suggested that government work stops after an election and seems to come to life at the end of legislature. Seems all projects take 5 years to plan and implement. What a coincidence.

Who really cares in the end who opens the park officially? What is important is that our youngsters and future generations can benefit from this park and can keep increasing Malta's competitiveness.

This is curious! So its impossible to make an extension in the Delimara power plant to use and store gas within 2 years but its perfectly feasible to develop 4 largish buildings and grounds landscaping plus all necessary equipment of what is essentially more than 8 acres of land or 31 tomna (to give you a better figure to grasp) within one year. What's this? a case of two weights two measures?

Or like the 20,000 jobs that has been created in the past 5 years + the 11,000 senior citizens that are still working and receiving their pensions in full. Is not that Smart ?

Clearly the largest global economic downturn has missed your radar. Malta has one of the highest employment rates in the EU and no bad debts. Be grateful for what you have and don't bring petty politics into subjects you don't understand.

Actually Mr Green I think that the 20000 jobs have been created in the first four years . We've been hearing of these 20000 jobs for the past year, so that means that not even one job has been created in this last year.
