Old man involved in security service car accident dies
A 90-year-old man who was hit by a car driven by the head of the security service, Godfrey Scicluna, has passed away.
Mr Scicluna suspended himself from the service on Saturday and is facing court proceedings over the accident.
Sources said he was parking his car close to home in Paola, when he hit the old man. Mr Scicluna only realised he had hit the man after he exited the vehicle.
The man underwent two operations after the accident. His death, however, was from natural causes.

I am sorry to hear of the demise of this old man, not because he died but because he suffered before he died. I was hit slightly by a car once and I can say the impact was overwhelming.
Nonetheless I do not think that sensationalising the incident 8 months ago would have made much of a difference to this man. However it would have derailed the sensitive works-in-progress by the Security Service.

In defence of Godfrey Scicluna, had this 90-year-old man been a healthy 25 year-old, the prognosis of injuries in such accident would have been better and not fatal.

As the saying goes: "The operation was a success but the patient died." Very true accidents do happen, but the question remains. Why was this accident kept under wraps for six months? Are we to understand that Mr Scicluna, a man of his position neglected to make a report with the police or was this another cover up by someone in the police department?A take care of your own situation? Just asking.

8 months sir,and not 6- but nevertheless the question remains apposite.

I see nothing,I hear nothing I know nothing. These words are being used too often recently. Let us take this latest comment by the Commissioner Of Police: he knew nothing about the Head Of Security incident. Does that mean, the police officers who made this report hushed this report? Can the Head Of Security on suspension now, be called to testify in the oil scandal? People start suspecting.

It only means what should be obvious. Not every case of accidental injury as this would be brought to the personal attention of Commissioner of Police. Please note that death was not due to the accident. The Head of Security ensured that this personal accident would not affect the conduct of due police investigation. The reaction to this news is the habitual character assassination by innuendo.

Francis Saliba, you seem to know far more about this case than the Commissioner of Police himself. What astounds me is that you find it all so very acceptable and garden variety common practice.

@Grace Pavia.
Your assessment of what I "seem to know" is completely wrong and may explain why you are "astounded" so easily.

What most of us object to is not that a police officer was involved in a tragic accident. That happens and is very unfortunate when it does. What puzzles many of us is why was it keep under wraps? The most insignificant traffic mishap is reported with regularity by the media. In this instance it was kept from public knowledge for a full 6 months. Why?

This incident actually occurred back in June , 2012 and has been kept under wraps all this time .WHY SO?

He died of natural causes, but those two operations could also have had a negative effect on the poor old man's health.R.I.P.

Wonder if the poor old man could have survived if he were not hit ? Godfrey should do the decent thing
resign and retire home.

Once again, thanks to the media something gets done. The PN always reacts after media attention brings up some case of corruption or criminal activity - Mosta PN club comes to mind. It seems that once again, no action was taken until the media uncovered the case. Gonzi needs to explain why.

It has been reported that seems like Mr Scicluna asked the traffic police / warden not to proceed with filing of the accident report. I stand to be corrected but this seems to be the case for his auto suspension.

That's my take on the matter. A very bizarre 6 month old episode that had it not been for Malta Today, not even the Commissioner would have been aware of it. However, I find it unacceptable that the Government of the day did not carry out this suspension itself.

It was an accident that could happen to any one, So what you are saying is that if i would be involved in an accident i would have to be suspended from work.

True an accident, so you expected the police to just ignore. I would have expected better driving skills from a senior officer especially when serving in an intelligence agency.
The police officers who initially came across this accident should have referred it to the police commissioner immediately and not investigate it themselves.

No. But you are duty bound to report the incident. Apparently this was not the case with Secret Service Head Mr. Scicluna. And being the person with a high profile post within the Secret Service and the Police he is always duty bound to report the accident, even it he wasn't involved himself.

Can the Principal Permanent Secretary (as the official responsable for the public service) kindly inform on the provision under which public officers apparently can 'suspend themselves' from the service?

My prayers for the Old mans family. An unfortunate accident which could have happened to anyone. Why all the bad publicity for the Godfrey Scicluna ?

So now taht all the critics with their cynical comments know what happened may hopefully have the face and apologise for irritating readers that this was politically motivated.

It would be silly for people to think this was politically motivated, however it is strange that this case was kept under wraps for 6 months and in the meantime Mr. Scicluna remained in his position! If it was you or me, we would have been treated differently

We have so many car accidents in Malta through out the year,.
Do you know of anyone who had to suspend himself from work because one was involved in such accidents ?
