The Big Debate: Send your questions

Many questions have been asked, answered or dodged in the course of the election campaign, but many voters have still not made up their minds.

Timesofmalta.com is offering readers the chance to have their questions asked during the debate between Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat and Alternattiva Demokratika leader Michael Briguglio at the Intercontinental Malta, St Julian’s, on Tuesday.

The debate is being presented by the Times of Malta and will be chaired by Herman Grech.

If you could ask a question to the leaders of the political parties, what would it be? Is there a topic that has been completely ignored? Can you think of that one question no one dared to ask?

Send your suggestions to [email protected] and your question could be asked during the live debate on Tuesday.

With less than three weeks to go, this is your chance to influence the discussion and get politicians talking about the issues that really matter to you.

Tuesday’s debate will be streamed live on timesofmalta.com and broadcast on Net TV and One, starting at 8.45pm.

The Pl isn't committing itself to a specific number, BUT it is saying that it is aiming that by 2020 we will have 75% of the total workforce employed.

Mr .Axisa,

i must be missing a point. If they are promissing that 75% of the total workforce will be employed, does it mean that 25% of the wrok force will be unemployed?

Daniel Zarb

Hi Julian the employment rate is the percentage of the population that is working. Currently in Malta it is about 55% and that statistic sees us as one of d lowest ranked EU member states regarding employment rate. It is largely due to d very low number of women working. The target is 75% by 2020. It is essential to reach that target and prevent d need of increasing the retirement age once again.

@John Caruana.

People like you do not even merit to use social media. Sorry but before making such questions, inform yourself.
At the moment there are much less than 75% of the total workforce employed as most of them are women who are not even trying to find a job.

You are mixing up LNG with LPG - two very different gases. In fact the price of LNG has remained stable and could go down as more of it is produced. LPG is highly explosive as opposed to LNG and therefoe this combined with lower prices have increased demand for LNG.

True... Have these been returned? They keep saying they have... But they say it so shyly ? Where they returned or not?

And what about the article in The New York Times that stated that The governments of MALTA and Slovenia are hiding a part of their debts which will certainly be effecting the current Euro crisis and which may also bring problems like those faced by Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. Very said situation being brought about by the GonziPN government.

The answer is simple but for some reason ignored - GO HIGHER! Why we keep building low buildings is beyond me! Roof services such as aerials, water tanks, satellite dishes, solar panels and solar heaters are visible from street level (quite an eyesore) and contractors try to fit in as much apartments into a confined space, resulting in tiny living environments!

With the achievement Dr. Gonzi got you can add the five + billions of euro in debts Mr.Bonello

Jos Borg

Feb 20th, 10:31

In 2004, before Malta joined the EU, Gonzi promised all Maltese a new way of doing politics which he said he had practised over the years.

What has happened with this new way?

With the latest PN poster dividing Maltese into blues and reds, a fragmented party, a prime minister totally bereft of leadership skills, and polls indicating a 10% shift of PN 2008 voters to Labour, is this what he meant

M. Cachia

Feb 20th, 11:18

Credentials - in the EU Part only:

The Maltese elected 4 Labour MEPs against 2 PN MEPs form a total of 6 MEPs

That is saying something.

JOHN WHITE

Feb 20th, 12:43

Mr.Brincat you should also include the €1.128 billion that Dr.Gonzi brought from the eu.

Mr Ferriggi

The Oil Scandal was not brought up by the PL but by independent media, that is, the MALTATODAY & THE TIMES. Obviously the PL having learned of this had to ask questions as it was duty bound. On the other hand, to hide their faces the PN searched their archives to find something to take them out of the limelight.

Well put.. my questions exactly!

Anthony A. Mifsud

Feb 20th, 10:16

Simple answer Mr. Friggiri , the PM knew all about this more than five 5 years ago!
As the the Ex, President of the the PN Dr. Frank informed the world.
Why they had to hide this is well-known now!
Embarrassment ! Mr.friggiri

Very good question / suggestion. But don't hold your breath.

Mr Pace you are right but may I remind you that first elections were contested only by the PN. Yes some independents were actually Labourites but at least they did not militate under the party. To sum it all up, how many "true independents" are there in Malta. I would rather see LC elections being contested by locality entities, like civic clubs, football clubs, scouts group etc etc.

David Bonavia

Feb 20th, 13:24

Perfectly agreed!

I would also add that there should be a number of educational requirements to be able to contest to a LC election and perhaps, a proven track record!

D Borg

Feb 25th, 09:41

Political parties should be swept away from LCs

However each contestant should be required to disclose ALL organisations/groups he/she is/was ever a member in.

Dear Mr Zammit, PL Manifesto Malta Taghna Lkoll: Section 9 - AMBJENT, IPPJANAR U RIZORZI last paragraph reads: PAJJIZNA B'LIGIJIET AKTAR ANIMAL-FRIENDLY U KUMMISSARJU GHALL-PROTEZZJONI TAL-ANNIMALI.

yes charles I know, I've read it...It's a good start but is pretty vague and i don't know what the other 2 are proposing.
