Two Romanians were this morning given a six month jail term suspended for two years after they admitted to begging under false pretenses near Mater Dei hospital on Wednesday.

The women, Lacramioara Ciurar, 26 and Armeanca Caldarar, 18, broke into tearless sobs throughout their arraignment as they stood in the dock with clasped hands looking at their interpreter as the case got underway.

The Romanians were carrying 29 leaflets stating:

“Please help me, I have a girl of nine months, suffers on tumour. I love my daughter, I don’t want to louse her Please help me, she needs surgery. Please help me in the name of God. I thank you a lot. Please return the leaflet, I have only this one. Thank you again for your help.”
