Police Commissioner John Rizzo yesterday requested a statement from the man who allegedly saw a “white block” being cut up in the Labour Party’s Safi club four years ago.

Safi’s committee president Johan Mula told The Times he gave the Police Commissioner a statement about the case yesterday after being requested to do so.

“I don’t think I should comment any further,” he said.

According to secret recordings of Labour deputy leader Toni Abela, Mr Mula had seen a person cutting up a “white block” in the club’s kitchen but had cleaned up the evidence before reporting the matter.

Dr Abela said the barman who was responsible for the club was sacked as soon as Mr Mula gave a written declaration about what he saw. The Times has asked the Labour Party for this declaration but no reply has been given.

In the recording released last week, Dr Abela implies that he did not report the matter to the police because it would have landed the committee president in trouble.

In an interview with The Times, Dr Abela said he used his “discretion” to protect the “honest” committee members. The police last week said they had interviewed “all the persons involved” in the case but none of the statements revealed any details or information “which could further lead to identify the person or place mentioned in the recording”.

They did not specify when the interviews took place but said the investigation started in October 2010.

The PN earlier this week published letters sent to Labour leader Joseph Muscat in 2009 and 2012 from the sacked Safi barman, who claimed he had been framed and treated unfairly by the party.
