A Nationalist Government would ensure that the police force is equipped with the technology and equipment to fight crime, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

He was inaugurating the new forensic laboratories at the police headquarters in Floriana.

Through an investment of over €2 million, funded by the EU, the police now boast of a new database of DNA and fingerprints that allows information sharing with other EU countries.

Other parts of the laboratories are dedicated to the analysis of body fluid, such as blood, and the analysis of documents such as passports.

Two sections were named after PS Saviour Muscat and PC Joseph Hare, who died while on duty aboard patrol boat C23 in 1984.

Their relatives were present for the inauguration.

Dr Gonzi mentioned some of the PN electoral proposals for the police force that include more investment and ensuring that officers have the right to join a trade union.
