The Nationalist Party is in a state of panic with regard to the police force, with two meetings having been held within the space of a few days about trade union membership and overtime pay, PL home affairs spokesman Michael Falzon said.

He said the police force had been allowed to slide into demotivation for the past five years, but now, a few weeks before the general election, there was panic within the PN.

The police had for years been practically ignored on issues such as overtime pay and the right to union membership, but now, in a desperate attempt to back-pedel, a meeting was held with the Malta Police Association at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday,  followed the next day with a meeting at PN headquarters. Both meetings were approved by the Commissioner of Police.

Such meetings, Dr Falzon said, showed how the PN had not given up on continuing to take the members of the police force for a ride right up to the end,  for political ends.
