Labour leader Joseph Muscat spent the night in Gozo and crossed to Malta on the 6 a.m. ferry today to join workers who have to do so every day.

Dr Muscat chatted to some of the workers in the ferry cafeteria during the crossing.

Later in the morning, he turned the Labour focus of the electoral campaign to tourism, meeting  workers of the Qawra Palace Hotel during a tour of the hotel.

He said that Malta's tourism product was good, but needed improving, with more variety. A new Labour government, he said, would have teams specially tasked with upgrading and maintaining sites which were popular with tourists.

He said that while the Labour Party was pleased with the increase in tourist arrivals, the issue was about the profitability which such numbers yielded.

A central plank of Labour policy to improve the financial viability of tourism establishments - as well as establishments in other sectors of the economy - was the planned reduction in water and energy tariffs.

He said that Labour would retain the Budget  incentives for hoteliers who continued to invest to upgrade their facilities.

Later in the morning Dr Muscat visited Malta International Airport, meeting workers in the various sections, as well as the management.

He said that a Labour government, in association with the airlines, would seek to increase the number of flights to Malta, particularly from destinations outside Europe. The North and Central African markets, for example, still needed to be tapped. Air Malta, he stressed, remained crucial for Malta's economy.

Replying to various questions, Mr Farrugia referred to a statement by the Finance Ministry yesterday and said the ministry was not well informed when it found no links between George Farrugia and a company investigated for alleged tax evasion.

On yesterday evening's fight at Rabat PL club, Dr Muscat urged the media not to blow the incident out of proportion. He recalled that a man was killed in Marsaxlokk in an incident which started inside Marsaxlokk PN club, but said he would not make political capital from such incidents.

Reacting to a comment by Anglu Farrugia that the issue between him and Dr Muscat was not over yet, Dr Muscat said the Labour Party's door remained open for Dr Farrugia.
