Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday called on the electorate to “make history” and elect a multi-party system to Parliament, in line with other European democracies.

“Voters can make history by electing AD for that third progressive voice of reason in Parliament. This entails 2,000 first preference votes in a district,” chairman Michael Briguglio said at a press conference in front of Parliament.

“After 50 years of Parliament under the grip of two parties, Malta could join the rest of Europe and ensure reasoned debates instead of partisan pique,” he said, adding that in Parliament AD will table legislative proposals for environmental protection, social justice and civil rights.

Spokesman Mario Mallia, present for the press conference, spoke about the need for sensible policies that do not put the rights of future generations in jeopardy.

“We’ve seen the other parties sideline health and education sustainability. Promising anything from giving medicines to those over 70 regardless of their needs and the indiscriminate dishing out of IT tablets, to gifts of €500 to €1000 for every youth irrespective of means, will lead to finances becoming unsustainable.

“Considering our own deficit, our downgrading by Standard and Poor’s and the ongoing recession in the eurozone, such politics is tentatively populist and irresponsible,” he said. This would hurt the weakest and trample on the rights of the hard working, law abiding citizens, Mr Mallia added.

“If people want real change, they have to vote for it. AD in Parliament will be the voice of reason and ensure legislation about party financing and whistleblowers will be introduced.”
