I refer to the letter by Anthony Spiteri referring to the exit gate in Independence Avenue inside St Luke’s Hospital (February 9).

He describes the chaos created during the entry and exit times for the schoolchildren, parents and school staff at San Ġorġ Preca College, Pietà Primary.

I would like to inform the correspondent that the persons in charge of opening and closing the gate are following a union directive in this regard. These employees are not in any way connected to the Ministry of Education but to the Ministry of Health because this is a private road within the precincts of St Luke’s Hospital grounds.

As the head of this school, I am very aware of the difficulties which are ensuing as a result of the gate’s closure. I am in constant contact with both the police, who are giving us support in the traffic management at entry and exit times, as well as with Ministry of Health officials, who are responsible for the hospital grounds. One and all are hopeful that an agreement will soon be reached and the situation brought speedily back to normal.
