Kate Gonzi - The woman behind the PM

Video: Jason Borg

Kate Gonzi’s most prized possession is an eternity ring given to her by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi just after their wedding before they left for their honeymoon.

He had just graduated as a lawyer and made a real sacrifice to save up for it, the Prime Minsiter’s wife tells Kristina Chetcuti in an interview for The Sunday Times.

Mrs Gonzi is very much aware that the wives of party leaders have a key role in politics nowadays. She is very conscious of her role and the fact that she is not a party official.

Her husband, she says, gives her a lot of space, believes in her and appreciates her help.

He has a lack of interest in food but loves computers and always pulls his weight when it comes to house maintenance.

Watch excerpts of the interview above. Read the whole interview in The Sunday Times.

You are wrong He could be working as hard as he is today

Now it is in his blood to work long hours, and most politicians do the same

Behind any good polititician there is always his best other half

I am nearly 77 and have never stopped working and yes studying even these days,

I only have much less responsibility today

I'm voting Labour, but I don't condone personal attacks on the wives of the two leaders. There are similar comments regarding JM's wife, so cheap shots are not restricted to one side only. I just hope that we remember that both ladies are not politicians and should not be treated as such by anyone. My compliments to both Kate and Michelle.
