Police are investigating a second letter received by Alternattiva Demokratika leader Michael Briguglio over the Armier boathouses, which clarifies that a letter sent earlier this month was not a death threat.

Dr Briguglio said the second letter, which he did not see because it was referred directly to the police, had retracted the first one, saying it was not meant to be taken as a threat. It said he was being “forgiven” for his statements about the Armier boathouses issue. He said the letters, both of which were sent to the residence where he lived around seven years ago, were being investigated by the police who he thanked for their prompt action.

The first letter warned him and his family against speaking out on the Armier boathouses issue.

AD has been consistent in its stand against the illegal boathouses and over the years repeatedly called for their removal, arguing that squatters should not be permitted to enjoy the fruits of their crime.

Throughout the electoral campaign, the leaders of the two main political parties said they were committed to finding a solution to the boathouses’ occupation of public land on the north coast.

Dr Briguglio spoke about the letters during an interview appearing in The Sunday Times tomorrow in which he discusses several of AD’s proposals, the need for a third party in the Maltese political system and how this would ensure progressive and socially just legislation and policies.

Meanwhile, Alternattiva Demokratika said that if elected to Parliament it would do its utmost to ensure the rights and independence of people with disabilities were respected and protected.

AD’s spokeswoman on disability issues, Claire Azzopardi Lane, said the use of guide dogs in Malta was being promoted among blind people and people who were visually impaired. There were 10 guide dog users but the Malta Guide Dog Foundation envisaged the need of another 40 to 50 dogs to cater for all those who would benefit from such support.

The foundation, she said, stressed the importance of consistent standards of access laws for guide dog users.
