A Labour government would work closely with the teachers union and make sure that education proposals are implemented, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said this afternoon.

"We took on many of the union's proposals, most of which we were already considering. So if elected to government we will not leave them on the shelf," he told the Malta Union of Teachers' council members during a meeting.

Labour would ensure there was a campaign on the important role of teachers in society, continue building and maintaining schools and invest in teachers. One example was the one year sabbatical the workings of which will be discussed with the union.

"We will have constant discussions with the union and not just in moments of crisis... MUT will be an essential partner to success," he said.

He condemned any violence that the union may have faced during the 80s. The problems of the eighties had been brought up earlier by MUT president Kevin Bonello.

Mr Bonello said he was glad that PL had adopted some of its electoral proposals, and hoped they would be implemented. He said the union would soon celebrate its 94th anniversary and history had shown it worked with any government.
