Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this evening that the Labour Party could not go any lower after the released recording of its deputy leader Toni Abela.

Addressing a crowd of Nationalist supporters in Mqabba, Dr Gonzi said: "he is the deputy leader and Labour Leader Joseph Muscat has ended up protecting him".

Dr Gonzi said Dr Abela's actions, along with the accusation of former Labour deputy leader Anglu Farrugia of political murder by Dr Muscat and a recent recording of General Workers Union Secretary General Tony Zarb showed the party's true colours.

There was no getting away from the link between the Labour Party and the union because there was a recording. This went back to the "bad times" when the two were linked, Dr Gonzi said.

He urged the electorate not to lose hope and be strong. "People are hearing us and slowly coming towards us," he said.

Dr Gonzi got glowing praise from Philip Bradbourne, a British Conservative MEP, who said Malta enjoyed stability when other countries were weighed down by major problems because of the Prime Minister's decisions.

Tough decisions were taken but Malta was on a stable path for the future and growth, he said.
