The Prime Minister is increasingly finding himself in a “precarious” situation over the oil scandal, according to Joseph Muscat.

The Labour leader was referring to an e-mail exchange published by Malta Today yesterday showing how a rogue oil trader claimed to have met Transport Minister Austin Gatt.

After having stood by Dr Gatt, the Prime Minister had “a lot to answer” for, Dr Muscat added.

Piling on the pressure, Dr Muscat insisted that Dr Gonzi had not yet answered the important question of whether in the past he had been informed of corruption allegations surrounding the buying of oil at Enemalta.

“The Prime Minister has a duty to give clear answers that are not yet forthcoming,” Dr Muscat insisted.

Speaking at a Labour event for young people at Sky Club, Paceville, Dr Muscat said his deputy Louis Grech’s role will be to coordinate the implementation of the Labour manifesto by the different ministries.

The Labour leader kicked off the interview by saying that a Labour government will encourage a healthy lifestyle among young people.

He pointed out it was important to wear running shoes, in a jibe referring to comments made about video footage that was transmitted by timesofmalta.com as part of a feature showing a day in the life of the Labour leader.

Part of the footage showed Dr Muscat training at a gym. With only part of his black running shoes showing, some commentators thought Dr Muscat was still wearing his regular shoes and the whole thing was just a set up – it was not.

“You do not need to be a professional athlete but it is important to encourage a healthy lifestyle and our roadmap speaks of this but it is important to wear training shoes,” he said with a smile. The Labour manifesto pledges incentives to encourage gym membership. Apart from the studio audience of young Labour activists, few other people attended the event, part of the I’m In campaign organised by the Labour Youth Forum.
