Video - Lightning strikes the Vatican
A flash of lighting is seen over St.Peter's Basilica during a rainstorm in this picture provided by Ansa news agency last night.
Pope Benedict stunned the Roman Catholic Church yesterday when he announced he would stand down, the first Pope to do so in over 600 years, saying he no longer had the mental and physical strength to carry on.

Why so much ado about Benedict's resignation? No man at 78 years of age would be considered for any job never mind the leader of 1.5 billion faithfuls in hard religious conflict. No doubt whatsoever that at 84 his capacity is seriously diminished. Kudos to Benedict for his humility and integrity.

Why are Pope's always elected who are so long in the tooth? There should be an age limit for any Pope to continue in this most tasking and enervating job-80 for example!Who knew there was a facility in place whereby a POPE could resign his position and did he have to give notice?
