Rare documents presented to Maritime Museum

Rare books dating to the 18th century which documenting the papal fleet, the medicine that ship doctors prescribed and a history of the Order of St John have been presented to the Maritime Museum by maritime researcher Joseph Muscat.
He also presented a number of detailed ship models and a naval clock.
Mr Muscat, 78, is an expert ship model-maker and restorer who specialises in the naval activities of the Order of St John. He is the author of many publications.
“I am very glad to leave my collection to the museum. I encourage others to leave their items to museums before they die so that they can be enjoyed by future generations,” he said.

Mr.Muscat is an expert model boat builder indeed and I learned a lot from him,it is a pity that he was not allowed to finish the 4 mt. Maltese Galley which he was building at the Maritime Museum,...because of his retirering age. This special model must be finished, it would be a great showpiece.

Mr Muscat had two pending jobs when he retired: the restoration of an 18th century frigate model, and the building from scratch of a model of an 18th century Maltese galley (Capitana). The frigate model was eventually completed by Mr Muscat, while the galley model was continued only as far as line drawing and detailed plans are concerned since Mr Muscat could not complete the actual model himself

This could not be taken up by the museum’s specialized staff either, since in the meantime they were taken up by another major project - the building from scratch of the carrack of the Order of St John. Once this is completed Heritage Malta is committed to complete the galley model. Both models are bound to be major attractions.

@ Russel Muscat. Mr Muscat you are not correct, it is not only line drawings that Mr Joseph Muscat did about the galley,he did the whole hull, I have seen it ,it is stored upside down at one of the workshops at the Maritime Museum.
