The Foreign Ministry said this evening that Malta  strongly condemns the nuclear test carried out by North Korea last night.

It said this was the latest in a regrettable string of provocative actions that had served to raise regional tensions.

"The DPRK’s nuclear test is a clear violation of its international obligations, in particular United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1718, 1874, and 2087, which was adopted unanimously last month.

"The Government of Malta urges the DPRK to abandon its nuclear weapons programme, to cease all nuclear testing and to immediately re-engage in a dialogue with the international community, including within the framework of the Six Party Talks," the ministry said.

The test was condemned by most of the world community, including the US and Russia, as well as the United Nations (see video).
