In what looked like an appeal to disgruntled PN voters, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday said although some may be angry at the Nationalist Party for not delivering all their aspirations, they should still make sure the country continues to move on a safe and sound course.

Addressing a well-attended party activity in Birkirkara, the hometown of the PN’s icon Eddie Fenech Adami, Dr Gonzi said the PN was promising another five years of tranquillity where opportunities for more jobs and education would continue to flourish.

“I know that out there are people who may feel disappointed with us because we didn’t manage to give them what they thought they had a right to. Think again, however, as the future of this country depends on making the right choice on March 9,” the PM warned. Touching on the new funds negotiated by Malta with the EU for the 2014-2020 budgetary period, Dr Gonzi said that despite the negative economic scenario, the island still managed to convince the other EU leaders that it needed more money to continue to move forward.

“It was very difficult to negotiate but we ended up with a very good €1.2 billion package which will mean another quality leap forward for this country.”

Dr Gonzi said that unlike the Labour Party, which was presenting an electoral wish-list and promising everything to everyone, the PN already knew where it wanted to go and how EU funds would be spent.

He said that while Labour wanted to throw away people’s money by squandering it on a power station the country did not need, the PN wanted to increase investment in education, healthcare and job creation.

Dr Gonzi appealed for another PN mandate, saying this was the only guarantee of the country continuing to prosper.
