The bus scheme under which residents are charged lower fares than non-residents is in line with EU legislation, the Transport Ministry said yesterday.

It was reacting to a Sunday Times report revealing that the European Commission is set to take legal action against Malta over the ‘discriminatory’ bus fares.

The Ministry insisted the fares are proportionate and intended to address congestion and health problems by getting more people to ride buses instead of drive cars.
