The two big political parties raised over €1 million in their televised fundraising marathons over the weekend.

The Nationalist Party raised €516,775 on Saturday and donations to the Labour Party amounted to €582,499 yesterday.

Both initiatives were held between noon and midnight, with both parties urging their supporters to donate more funds to finance their electoral campaigns.

Just before Christmas, both parties raised over €905,500 in separate fundraisers. The PN had collected €490,545 and PL just under €415,000.

Lawrence Gonzi and Joseph Muscat thanked their supporters for their contribution, saying the money was needed by their respective parties to continue spreading their message before the March 9 election.

Dr Gonzi said his was the only party that could guarantee a secure future.

For Dr Muscat, the money was needed to bring about a much-needed change in direction that would ensure the country would truly belong to all.
