Pressure to strip Peter Andre of Valletta Cultural ambassador title

News that Peter Andre – former pop singer turned reality TV star – has been appointed Cultural Ambassador to Valletta has caused a furore with hundreds calling on the local council to strip him of the title.

Mr Andre, who last topped the UK charts in 1995 with his single Mysterious Girl, was declared Cultural Ambassador by the Valletta council while in Malta last week.

Upon hearing the news, several people resorted to the social media to voice their shock. More than 500 signed an online petition calling for Mr Andre to be stripped of the title.

Mayor Alexei Dingli said: “The title can be misleading perhaps. He does not represent the culture of Valletta, we’re just seeing it from a promotion point of view.”

Maybe they are trying to get him to bring his ex wife over so that she can paint the new parliament pink. Jordan likes pink!

Mayor Dingli is only following his Master's footsteps. Lets not forget that Gonzi appointed an ambassador who is not an ambassador - just a nice title, that's all.

It seems that handing out Ambassador Titles in Malta is like handing out peanuts to a monkey. No class whatsoever. An Ambassador represents a country and not a town or an airline. Would you offer the title " Knight of Malta" to anybody? Of course not.Titles are earned and not given out indiscriminately as a business subtitle.Maybe they should assign somebody as The Gonzi/Piano Project Ambassador?

Correction - what was once one of the nicest cities in Europe, until the gang at Castille decided to "modernise" it.

Guys, all you need to do is get into the British tabloids - even if it is for the wrong reasons - then pay a visit to Mayor Dingli. And heypresto youqualify for the title of Ambassador. Please remember that I gave you the advice when you have earned your title. The current fashion for a little commssion come to mind.

A dumb comment and very typical of inexperienced and un-travelled locals.

good comment - most probably he won't know the difference. This is his first visit here and we make him Valletta's ambassador. Cannot believe this!
