Pressure to strip Peter Andre of Valletta Cultural ambassador title
News that Peter Andre – former pop singer turned reality TV star – has been appointed Cultural Ambassador to Valletta has caused a furore with hundreds calling on the local council to strip him of the title.
Mr Andre, who last topped the UK charts in 1995 with his single Mysterious Girl, was declared Cultural Ambassador by the Valletta council while in Malta last week.
Upon hearing the news, several people resorted to the social media to voice their shock. More than 500 signed an online petition calling for Mr Andre to be stripped of the title.
Mayor Alexei Dingli said: “The title can be misleading perhaps. He does not represent the culture of Valletta, we’re just seeing it from a promotion point of view.”

I believe the only ones who do not understand what is really misleading here are the Valletta Local Council. They need to understand; Valletta is not Paceville.

Is the Valletta council insane ??
Peter Andre is a no-talent , publicity chasing deadbeat , who knows as much about culture as my dog and until this event could probably not have placed Malta on a map.
Get a prominent and intelligent Maltese to fill this position as it should be filled.

What possessed the Valletta Council to appoint Peter Andre' as a Cultural Ambassador to our Capital? Maybe a Boys' club or a Pop Group yes. Peter Andre' is a nice young man but he only made the headlines when he married the notorious Jordan because he was felt sorry for. Please have a rethink Valletta and give Andre another job but not this.

Mayor Dingli and his Local Council are A shambles. If they are not able to adjudicate and decide correctly on a number of waste management tenders ,how do u expect them to get this right. They are the product of what we sow.....unfortunately.

Valletta LC said "the nomination does not have a particularly strict set of criteria" neither does it have any standards it seems! We should all speak up about the appointment of this joker as Valletta is not just any old town, it's our capital city! They could have chosen Gilbert Agius - a Maltese football player from Valletta, who plays for Valletta and for Malta - I'm sure he can be a good Ambassador for Valletta.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY THE HECK WE ARE GIVING ALL THESE TITLES TO PETER ANDRE? FIRST HE WAS GIVEN THE AWARD FOR THE BEST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST AT THE MAAs... AND NOT THIS??
WHAT HAS HE EVER DONE TO MALTA? IS HE HELPING MALTESE ARTISTS IN ACHIEVING THEIR DREAMS? ONLY THIS JUSTIFIES THIS NONSENSE!

Is this title bestowed on a first come first serve basis or maybe a councillor or two had a soft spot for Peter Andre? We are becoming the laughing stock of Europe not to say the whole world.

Whats there to mislead mr.Dingli? The first pretty face which came once in OUR COUNTRY, now he s ambassador? But yes he s ambassador but nothing to do with culture, or he got the whole title or part of it?! We got so many maltese but none filled the position, imisskom tisthu twaqqaw unur pajjizna u tal maltin

This appointment shows how low the PN has sunk where culture is concerned. They nowm promote one-hit wonders of absolutely no cultural value. I suppose Andre will sing in that 'performing space' where no artisit orth his salt would dream of appearing. Millions spent on a space for rubbish low-level culture.

Let's all vote to l-Ajkla Party! The title to Peter is just as hilarious! But, then, with an open theatre and a building which we are going to rent to convene our highest institution, Parliament, both in the entrance of Valletta, our novle city, what could one expect from GonziPN and his followers?
James Tyrrell
Feb 10th, 15:41
Given the fact that Gonzi has already made a laughing stock of this beautiful old city by building his stupid looking memorial parliament building at the entrance perhaps this is just a continuation of the comedy theme.
Mr Andrew Camilleri
Feb 10th, 16:39
Mayor Dingli is only following his Master's footsteps. Lets not forget that Gonzi appointed an ambassador who is not an ambassador - just a nice title, that's all.

It seems that handing out Ambassador Titles in Malta is like handing out peanuts to a monkey. No class whatsoever. An Ambassador represents a country and not a town or an airline. Would you offer the title " Knight of Malta" to anybody? Of course not.Titles are earned and not given out indiscriminately as a business subtitle.Maybe they should assign somebody as The Gonzi/Piano Project Ambassador?

I bet I visit Malta more a year than Mr Andre, I love the place, the people the culture, the history, oh nearly forgot the newspaper! I often tell friends and strangers, how lovely Malta is, I am not famous just a silly old fool, but think I would qualify for an Ambassadosr role much than Mr Andre. But I do agree an Ambassador should come from the place he is an Ambassodor for.

Guys, all you need to do is get into the British tabloids - even if it is for the wrong reasons - then pay a visit to Mayor Dingli. And heypresto youqualify for the title of Ambassador. Please remember that I gave you the advice when you have earned your title. The current fashion for a little commssion come to mind.

Well I guess that the Valletta Local Council decided to follow Beneton and adopt "shock advertising" as a promotional tool. Will they succeed?
Only time will tell but a word of advice from a seasoned marketer:

One thing is certain: 2018 is getting nearer faster than we think.

Why is a foreigner an Ambassador for OUR (Maltese) Capital City? Is this the same issue of Air Malta not accepting a CUC MALTI?? We have competent persons for the role, artists if needed like Ira Losco, Joseph Calleja and other good ones. If the council is in difficulty they can search 'Maltese Singers" on Wikipedia to help them for a list of names!!

Feb 10th, 11:22
What was the Mayor of Valletta and the Council thinking of when they appointed Peter Andre as Cultural Ambassador when there are so many Maltese people deserving of this position. Maybe the Mayor enjoyed his 1 top ten hit or his performance in I'm a celebrity??? "Questionable" get me out of here. These are obviously the only credentials needed for such an important role.

Feb 10th, 11:10
A move taken too quickly and a respectable prominent maltese should have been nominated it is enough that the Historic Valletta entrance has been ruined a monumental scandal. Is-soltu l-ewwel il barranin u wara il maltin.( A chronic bad example by the Gonzi PN government). Should Air malta close down or change hands what is Joseph Callejja going to be left with?

This Facebook comment was posted to a photo of Peter Andre posing groping a female fan's breast:
"Do those Councillors have the least idea of the wrong messages they're sending about sexual harassment and gender issues? What sort of vetting was carried out? None obviously!"
I say that Valletta LC owes a huge apology to ALL of us,as Valletta is not just any city, but Malta's CAPITAL.

This is one of the best Facebook comments,I take no credit for it:
Part1: "This decision to me really represents the mentality which should be eradicated in Malta. We have always valued outsiders more than our own people and this is why our best almost always leave the island. Same goes for entrusting the parliament building project to a foreign architect."

It seems that Valletta or rather Malta has nothing else to do but to appoint every Tom Dick & Harry that perhaps is in the public eye cause of show business, same as in the UK every other show biz personality is a blooming Sir, what is going thought Malta's mind to make this Aussie pop singer (?) an ambassador, what happened to SIR< Cliff Richards then?

Feb 10th, 10:31
May I ask the Mayor why he thinks that the title is misleading?
And also what weight and charisma does Peter Andre has re the promotional point of view?
He was known for the 6 pack he carried and his relationship with Jordan!
Remove him at once and don't drag your feet to do so and PLEASE pick someone more distinctive than this has been!
David Farrugia

Let us solve this pickle in a simple way. We will tell Mr. Andre that we made a little mistake and have him stay as ambassador for the Valletta Waterfront, rather than the whole city.
I'm sure he'll see no difference, after all, the name is longer, so he'll guess it must be even more prestigious.
