Luqa roundabout monument back to its former glory
Videos: Mark Zammit Cordina
Colonna Mediterranea, the centrepiece of the controversial Luqa roundabout, has been restored to its former glory, a year after vandalism attacks left it headless.
Sculptor Paul Vella Critien, explains the repairs and says the art work has already been at the centre of culture in Europe.
Kristina Chetcuti reports.

More than the Colonna Mediterranea, one which has always intrigued me is further down the hill. It looks (to me) like a monument to a syringe. Does anyone here know what it represents?

Is it destined to become Malta's symbol?
There are rumours that "IT" has put Malta on the artistic/tourist map, say like d Eiffel Tower & the leaning Tower of Pisa!
Others opine that this grotesque phallic-like "Colonna Mediterranea" is but a figment of the fertile imagination of Malta's up-and-coming generation lost in an orgy of sensual pleasure!
Progressives & Liberals put together!

The phallus or a phallic symbol for Romans meant an embodiment of generative power, there are many other symbols that look like a phallus, such as swords, knifes, steeples, monuments and even the neck tie which is a representation of the phallus.
So all those ridiculous people who stood around it to hide it from the pope, for your information the Vatican city one of the longest one in the square.

X-rays, fragment analysis using microscopes... can we get the price of the restoration published? Probably another direct order that resulted in an insane bill for the tax payer.

And the cost to taxpayers for restoring this work of art (apologies to all similarly named works) to its former glory(if it ever was in such a former state?)
Simon Oosterman
Feb 8th, 15:28
Come on, Peter, If vandals destroy public property, be it trees or benches or art or something else, the taxpayer pays for the repair/replacement unless the vandals can be found. It is immaterial whether you like the destroyed objects or not.

Fragment analysis, x rays, microscopes... Are we talking about a contemporary ceramic piece or Michelangelo's Pieta here?! Come on, I have nothing against the sculpture and am not one of those who are scandalised by it but let's keep it in its proper perspective.

A work of art is exclusively the personal expression of the artist creating it.
If Maltese society finds this particular piece so offensive then please go ahead; interdict, excommunicate and completely ostracize the creator!!!!

This is a monument to baal that is a CURSE upon this Island, The word 'obelisk' literally means 'Baal's shaft' or Baal's organ of reproduction' (Page 341 Masonic and occult symbols illustrated. Rosanna, You are the only one calling it an obelisk. It is a column.
Maybe you have 'Baal's shaft' on your mind? They say art is what the viewer sees in it. If you see Baal's shaft, that says more about you than it does the artwork.
What is 'evil' is to become offended by a work of art in a natural shape.

There is absolutely no proof that the monument was subjected to a vandal attack rather than force majeure. And what if it has to do with the phallic symbol? The Greeks used to use this symbol as a way of praising the gods in their festivals. The Romans as well had a symbol which was directed to the god Pan and Bacchus. In the Renaissance up to the Baroque the phallus is still a central image becoming even more an individual element. But politically and religiously this metaphysical element was removed.

Tim Vella,
Finally I found someone with a good taste for art culture who thinks that this phallic symbol is displayed in an appropriate place, well done for your good taste in phallic symbols! prosit tas-sew!

It shouldn't have been hidden during the Pope's or anyone else's visit. - You don't see people covering-up the far more 'erotic' artworks in Rome or in other cultured cities, so why here ? - Small minds.
Charles. Many people are embarrassed and offended by the ostentatious wealth of the Vatican, but as far as I know, not one Pope has ever tried to hide it. - Get over yourself or grow up.

Phallic symbols are exactly that, phallic symbols..
this does not look much of a "symbol" but an exact reproduction .....
so please stop justifying everything in the name of art...
I have no problem at all with a male member erected in the middle of a roundabout, but do not try to pass it off as something else...

@Pierre Portelli,
It wasn't hidden for the pope, I was there and can verify this. Not everything you read in the media is true!
