Luqa roundabout monument back to its former glory

Videos: Mark Zammit Cordina

Colonna Mediterranea, the centrepiece of the controversial Luqa roundabout, has been restored to its former glory, a year after vandalism attacks left it headless.

Sculptor Paul Vella Critien, explains the repairs  and says the art work has already been at the centre of culture in Europe.

Kristina Chetcuti reports.

Come on, Peter, If vandals destroy public property, be it trees or benches or art or something else, the taxpayer pays for the repair/replacement unless the vandals can be found. It is immaterial whether you like the destroyed objects or not.

Yes. really doesn;t bother me at all. There are worse 'monuments' on other roundabouts. It's just one of many which were erected all over the island to embelish them.

Dylan C.

Feb 8th, 11:35

Without any intention of insulting its creator, I too find it phallic and embarrassing. When my UK relatives where visiting, that's the first thing they pointed at, making funny comments about it... So at least it serves as a mood enhancer or something, making people laugh.

Norman E Grech

Feb 8th, 11:43

@ Dylan C

But do we need to pay é40,000 (from our taxes) to a 'so called artist' to make people laugh? I don't think so!

I think it's not just the E that distibguishes us!

You're comparing the statues in the vatican erected 300 years ago with that 'sorry excuse of art' put in a Luqa round about?

I am very serious Mr. Cole!! But if one can not understand what is good and what is evil according to the BIBLE then one can not see the TRUTH.

Chris Finch

Feb 8th, 11:02

Rosanna, You are the only one calling it an obelisk. It is a column.

Maybe you have 'Baal's shaft' on your mind? They say art is what the viewer sees in it. If you see Baal's shaft, that says more about you than it does the artwork.

What is 'evil' is to become offended by a work of art in a natural shape.

Best thing that ever happened in Malta. Too many of these walking around on two legs.

Patrick Jansen

Feb 8th, 09:53

Yes it is something to be proud of. The tourists can see for themselves that Malta has grown up and became more open minded. Although the art is not a penis.

Where did you get the strange and bizarre idea that "nearly ALL of the population hates this 'monument'"?

Mario Borg

Feb 8th, 08:50

How do you know what all the population thinks? Did you ask them?

Michel Ellul

Feb 8th, 08:59

and as far as I am concerned, you do not have the power to speak for anybody else, either......

Paul Busuttil

Feb 8th, 09:02

Speak for yourself, you cannot speak for the whole population.
It is art, if it has provoked you into your emotions about the Art is in itself art.

Marvic Camilleri

Feb 8th, 09:21

The same population that hates this momument might as well, loathe our pre-historic figures from the temples. They too were vulgar by victorian standards. Are these the standards you are talking about?

Patrick Jansen

Feb 8th, 09:27

You should speak for yourself Adrian, as a very large part of the population has actually grown up and is finally becoming less and less closed minded.
By the way, go have a look at Pompei for example. I can assure you that you will see penis everywhere you look on ancient wall decorations. And then people call this shameful, in 2013. While it doesn't even represent a penis.

adrian agius

Feb 8th, 09:59

i said NEARLY all.

Apparently there are a few 'artistic' people around.

Diana Borg Cardona

Feb 9th, 02:09

Agree Victor. This is so like the time when there was a Maltese version of Candid Camera and they asked people near The Palace in Valletta, if, for the sake of modesty, they should put a pair of underpants on the Statue of Neptune in the Palace Courtyard!

When the pope came it was hidden by a billboard. One of his officers critizised the billboard and said that the pope can appreciate art.

E Schembri

Feb 8th, 09:28

It didn't insult the pope or anybody.

Nobody cares about this monument, if the timesofmalta didn't give it so much media coverage, hardly anyone would know about it!

Joseph Sammut

Feb 8th, 08:15

M. Spiteri

Feb 8th, 09:12

loool good one!

Mr Pierre Portelli

Feb 8th, 07:43

True, why did it have to be hidden on the papal visit? The many phallic symbols around Rome and in the Vatican itself are never covered!

victor pullicino

Feb 8th, 07:50

it is a shameful monument

Tim Vella

Feb 8th, 08:17

Quit criticising what you obviously don't understand. Phallic designs are not dirty, nor cheap.
Your god actually created you with one attached to your body as a permanent fixture. Does that make god dirty?
If your art culture is limited, that's nobody's fault.

Charles Micallef

Feb 8th, 08:30

Tim Vella
I am so glad that finally I met someone who understands what good art is all about,
I am not sure if your good taste in roadside monuments is to be commended or simply laughed at!

Mr Evan Camilleri

Feb 8th, 09:02

...and the pope's staff critizised the fact that it was hidden saying that the pope can appreciate art..... Seems you don't. Have you ever went to the Vatican?

Charles Micallef

Feb 8th, 09:05

Tim Vella,

Finally I found someone with a good taste for art culture who thinks that this phallic symbol is displayed in an appropriate place, well done for your good taste in phallic symbols! prosit tas-sew!

Pippo de Marco

Feb 8th, 09:10

It shouldn't have been hidden during the Pope's or anyone else's visit. - You don't see people covering-up the far more 'erotic' artworks in Rome or in other cultured cities, so why here ? - Small minds.

Charles. Many people are embarrassed and offended by the ostentatious wealth of the Vatican, but as far as I know, not one Pope has ever tried to hide it. - Get over yourself or grow up.

Lucas North

Feb 8th, 09:18

Phallic symbols are exactly that, phallic symbols..

this does not look much of a "symbol" but an exact reproduction .....

so please stop justifying everything in the name of art...

I have no problem at all with a male member erected in the middle of a roundabout, but do not try to pass it off as something else...

E Schembri

Feb 8th, 09:31

@Pierre Portelli,

It wasn't hidden for the pope, I was there and can verify this. Not everything you read in the media is true!
