Air Malta has appointed tenor Joseph Calleja as its brand ambassador.

The announcement was made at a press conference this afternoon.

Air Malta CEO Peter Davies said Joseph Calleja's reputation as an international performer made him one of the best ambassadors the airline could have to promote itself and Malta.

He said this was another milestone to not only promote its new brand identity, but also to promote Malta overseas.

Philip Saunders, the airline's chief commercial officer, said that he was thrilled by this partnership.

"Air Malta also aspires to become the ambassador of the very best that Malta can offer."

Joseph Calleja will be promoting the brand in a number of ways that are being explored, Mr Saunders said.

He said the airline was moving away from traditional advertising.

The partnership agreement was signed between Air Malta and NnG Promotions, local representatives of Joseph Calleja.

In his comments, Mr Calleja said that he was looking forward to be the airline's brand ambassador, through which he could also promote his country's heritage.

He said he felt at home as soon as he stepped on an Air Malta aircraft.

My, my, why do you have to criticise so aggressively and roughly? Isn't an advert for Air Malta and an advert for Malta? Isn't tenor Calleja a symbol that we can produce virtuosos? Or does your xenophobia blind you to the good that comes out from cooperation? Such contemptuous utterances on your part reflect only one thing.

Believe me I have the utmost respect for Mr Calleja and Iike everybody else appreciate his vast talent but I don't think he should be merchandised and sold to the highest bidder. He is already the Maltese Ambassador for the Maltese people. I think you are misundertanding my point altogether

Right you are Paul! AM needs to get its act together, service and price wise and a genuine wish to return to it's former glory. Rebranding MUST include the service that most Maltese and foreign patrons got accustomed to and comfortable with d service AIR MALTA used to offer. BTW how are you? We met at the now DEFUNKED Jerma Palace. Me working nts and you putting up with my nocturnal IT problems!

But WHY do small minded people have to drag politics into everything in these Islands? Joseph Calleja is what he is because he is using his talents to the best of his ability - full stop. Keep it up and above all keep smiling:)
