An investigation by the Ombudsman in 2004 into allegations involving the petrochemist being probed in the oil procurement was inconclusive, it was explained yesterday.

In a statement issued to clarify the status of the investigation, mentioned recently in a Government communication, the Office of the Ombudsman said the allegations had been looked into but there was no outcome.

The investigation was prompted by Alfred Pace, then a director at Ronasons Shipping Agency, who claimed that his agency was being discriminated against by petrochemist Frank Sammut who, at the time, was CEO of the Government-owned Mediterranean Offshore Bunkering Company Ltd.

At no stage during the investigation was there an allegation of corruption that would have necessitated referral to the Permanent Commission Against Corruption, the Ombudsman said.

On July 26, 2004, Ombudsman Joseph Sammut said that on the basis of available information there was no definite and conclusive proof that MOBC acted discriminatorily. The case was closed on September 7, 2004.
